Striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) are members of the weasel family, common throughout Ohio. About the size of a house cat, the black fur and 2 white dorsal stripes are distinctive of this malodorous mammal. Nocturnal and generally solitary, skunks can damage turf while digging for insects and small mammals.
Skunks will occupy abandoned groundhog holes or create their own burrows under porches, decks and sheds, often causing conflict with people and pets. When threatened, they release a pungent spray that can permeate for one mile.
Trapping and exclusion are the most effective methods for controlling nuisance skunks. Skunks can carry the Rabies and Distemper viruses, if you notice a skunk acting abnormally or overly aggressive, call Celtic Wildlife Control immediately!
